MDG 7 focuses on ensuring environmental sustainability. In MDG 7 there were many targets involved in the overall completion of this goal. Today we are going to focus on target C which is, To halve by 2015 the proportion of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation.
This graph illustrates the amount of progress India made in MDG 7.
India's water crisis
In the article fromIndia has only 1,000 cubic meters of water per person, even using the higher estimate. A country is considered water-stressed if it has less than 1,700 cubic meters per person per year. Therefore there is not enough water per person due to the large population in India.

Due to economic differences, not everyone has the access to the same amount of water largely due to ground water being extracted by farmers and not for public consumption.
Another cause of poor water quality is due to the lack of water treatment centers in India. Also surrounding rivers that have been polluted and are now unsafe for drinking.

Health Impacts due to water quality
- Problems regulating body temperature
- Diseases from weakened immune systems
- Diarrhea infections
- Chronic malnutrition
- Stunted growth in children
This graph illustrates the amount of stunting in the top 5 countries with the worst stunting in the world. Even though the percentages appear similar, India has a much higher rate due to a larger population. Children in India are especially stunted due to their lack of water.
Progress
The WASH program or the Water Sanitation and Hygiene institute educates people on how to be more sustainable on these issues occurring due to lack of water. By educating more and more people they will reduce the amount of materials they use and become more sustainable and healthy.
The Water Project partnered with Wells for Life. They help bring water to the poorest communities in India by funding fresh water well projects that will alleviate the suffering and lack of access to clean water.http://www.washinstitute.org/about_washi.php

Overall India's progress in achieving safe drinking water for the entire population increased from 71% to 94%, a 23% increase.
Question: Why is India struggling to provide safe drinking water to their population?
